On 17 October, the Victorian Biomedical Imaging Capability held its annual network meeting at the Ian Potter Auditorium, Melbourne Brain Centre. Over 70 people attended to hear Professor Lawrence Wald (Harvard University) give his keynote on new directions for brain MRI hardware and acquisition.

Professor Gary Egan from the VBIC Clayton node hosted the first session of the network meeting. Each of the 5 VBIC nodes (Hawthorn, Heidelberg, Clayton, Werribee, Parkville) gave updates on the developments of VBIC.

  •  Dr William Woods presented about MEG and 3T Trio
  •  Professor Gary Egan talked about imaging informatics workflows in place and plans for Victoria and Australia
  •  Professor Alan Connelly spoke about upgrade to 4.7 preclinical MRI with cryocoil
  •  Dr Brad Moffat highlighted the installation of the 7T MRI and DARIS.
  •  Dr Marjorie Milne provided an update on large animal imaging including horses, cows and even a live shark!

Professor Roger Ordidge from the VBIC Parkville node hosted the second session of the network meeting. Speakers presented on methods and resources to support imaging based research projects.

  • Professor Lawrence Wald spoke about new directions for brain MRI hardware and acquisition and the Human Connectome using 300mT/m gradients. 
  • Dr Sam Long (Werribee) presented on establishing a canine brain atlas as a model of epilepsy.
  • Dr Parnesh Raniga discussed imaging workflows
  • Professor David Liley elaborated on his work with EEG/MEG and epilepsy.
  • Dr David Raffelt talked about fixel-based morphometry.
